Wonderfully preserved, rustic, hand-hewn Norwegian square-cut log cabin on Lake Superior. Large grounds with path to the convergence of Indian Camp and Deer Yard Creek. It includes a sloping rock shoreline that comes up to a very protected area we call “council flats”. It's a low-lying area where Ojibwe elders met when their family groups migrated down to the lakeshore during the summer. If you look carefully you might find the old medicine wheel.
Deer Creek is a three bedroom, two bathroom, two story home with lots of room to roam and enjoy nature. The cabin was originally a farm house in the Hovland area built around 1832 and was later moved to its current spot near the mouth of Deer Creek in Lutsen. This could make it the oldest log building in use in the Minnesota north that is still livable in today- with lots of history within its walls.
Deer Creek is located near the very popular Cascade Beach Road area, just 10 miles north of downtown Lutsen near Cascade State Park. The cabin is just 12 minutes to Superior National at Lutsen Golf Course and Lutsen Mountains Ski and Recreation Area, which offers many activities in the summer months including an alpine slide and sight-seeing gondola to the summit of Moose Mountain. Take a short drive up the shore to Cascade River State park where you will find an enchanting waterfall after a short, easy hike. You are close to many dining options including the Lakeside Dining Room and Poplar River Pub at Lutsen Resort, Moguls Grille & Tap Room at Caribou Highlands, and Papa Charlie's Restaurant & Tavern at Eagle Ridge Resort. All of which features live music from popular local musicians throughout the year. Grand Marais is just a 15-minute drive up the shore where you can spend a day shopping and dining in the town's many unique shops and restaurants while enjoying a hike out to Artist's Point or just a stroll around the Harbor. Whether your goal is to relax or to go on an adventure- Deer Creek is a great place to be.
Please note: The historic nature of the home is a huge part of its charm, but a 150-year-old log home is not for everyone. We require that you call and talk to our rental agents before your book. Also note, there is another cabin near Deer Creek that may have a long-term renter. They are given a rental schedule and they are respectful of your privacy and peace.
It is a great spot. The house so roomie yet cozy with amazing views of the lake. Loved doing dishes at the kitchen sink. The beach was an adventure. Indian Camp Creek's mouth shifting about due to the rain event.

Thoroughly enjoyed Deer Creek cabin. Loved the view and the ambiance, though the beds were too hard for our liking(knowing this from our previous stay, we brought an air mattress with us). Enjoyed agate hunting, wading, and campfires on the shore (though the flies kept us offshore for two days). Fished the inland lakes and hiked Cascade River Park. Appreciated the bottled water, but would have liked to known about the water issue before our arrival. It didn't diminish our enjoyment of the property. Having stayed here before, we appreciated the availibility of wifi internet. Overall we had a very good experience and plan on staying here again.

Loved the cabin, loved the character- despite the old home smell, non-potable water and dead mouse. My family of 5 loved the lake shore and the walk down was enjoyable as well. We come to the north shore every year and this time was excellent!

Everything was as great as I expected. The property was comfortable and well taken care of, clean and the kitchen was well stocked. There was an issue with the well water and a missing shower curtain that was immediately resolved. We would be interested in renting again.

We all loved the cabin. We ate most of our meals with family that were within walking distance, the Deer Creek seemed to have all we could possibly need. The directions for accessing the cabin were very good and it was easy to access. The two large family rooms were very comfortable. I was disappointed that I couldn't get down to the beach. It was not made clear to me by staff how difficult the path down was and that there was no hand rail or steps. I had hoped to play on the pebble beachwith my grandchildren.

Truly enjoyed the character of the property and the close proximity to the lake. The nearby rental property felt somewhat odd but not that big of a deal. I felt the value was extremely good for the property. Very interested in returning for a longer stay.
Suggestions for improvement: the master bedroom needs a decent mattress, the foam pad doesn't really cut it. The grill needs a new grate. This did not negatively affect our stay...just informational for the owner. The lock box for the key was really hard to find; did I miss the location description on the email? Never would have found it if it was dark.

This was the perfect place for our family! The view out every window was like a postcard! We had our own beach to relax on and no neighbors or traffic to contend with! It was a very relaxing vacation and we hope to return!
