Did you have a little too much fun saying, “I need to go to Beaver Liquors to get my Prosecco!” this past summer? If you, too, have the maturity of a 12-year-old, I hate to be the one to bring you the bad news. Beaver Liquors is no more. The Grand Marais Municipal Liquor Store has returned to its previous location. Albeit, in a brand new building!
Wait, Beaver Liquors??
No, it was not the official name of the liquor store when it temporarily moved into the Beaver House Bait Shop last year. But… we know everyone called it that.
During the summer of 2024, visitors to Grand Marais couldn’t help but notice a huge change happening in the downtown area. The corner of 1st Street and Broadway was, for most of the summer, a giant hole in the ground. The series of buildings that once stood on top of that hole were the city municipal buildings, including the liquor store. Time had not been kind to the building. There was roof damage, leaky pipes, and just not enough space. A change was needed. So, the old building was torn down, and a new building was constructed in its place. However, since construction would take about a year to complete, the liquor store had to temporarily relocate.
This is where the Beaver House comes into play. The owner negotiated a rental of the bait shop for one year so the liquor store could stay in operation. We hear he took the year off to go kayaking so that he could give us the gift of calling the liquor store “Beaver Liquors”. And for that, we thank him.
The New Grand Marais Municipal Liquor Store
Construction on the new city building is now complete! The Grand Marais Municipal Liquor Store has returned to its rightful place at the corner of 1st Street and Broadway. Inside you will find a new, modern store with much more space and a more workable layout than the previous store.
While the beverage selection is about the same as it was before, the building is new and shiny and bright. Visitors can now enjoy a more pleasant liquor-buying experience in the beautiful new space.
Now, Beaver Liquors will live on only in our memories. A brief period of time that will soon become a distant memory. What a great year that was.
Getting There…
The Grand Marais Municipal Liquor Store is once again located at the corner of 1st Street and Broadway in downtown Grand Marais. Turn right on Broadway from Highway 61 and look for the new, blue building on the right. There are still public restrooms in the building, but they are now inside and not accessible from the outside, and they are only open during business hours. Current hours can be found on the City of Grand Marais website.
