Come home to Haeli House, a stunning luxury retreat located along the shores of Lake Superior in Hovland, Minnesota. In Icelandic, Haeli means “refuge”—an especially fitting name for a home designed to help you slow down, reconnect, and escape the everyday.

Haeli House was architecturally designed to rest among boulders, trees, and a wild rocky shoreline, organically adapting to its surroundings. The architecture draws inspiration from Scandinavian design and the artisan woodworking traditions that have long been part of Minnesota’s North Shore culture, creating a home that is warm, understated, and beautifully connected to its surroundings.

At the heart of the property is a custom Scandinavian sauna, tucked among the Boreal forest and designed around a dramatic picture window overlooking Lake Superior. Heat up in the sauna, then step outside for a rejuvenating cold plunge into the Big Lake just steps away. It’s a quintessential North Shore experience—equal parts invigorating and restorative.

Haeli House features a beautiful open-concept layout. Relax in the sunken living room, step right out onto the lake-facing deck, or gather for a home-cooked meal at the large central dining table. With four bedrooms and three bathrooms, there is plenty of room for the whole family to settle in.

Outside, fire up the grill, relax in the Adirondack chairs, and listen to the waves roll against the rocky shoreline. Whether you're spending your days exploring the North Shore or simply staying put and soaking in the scenery, Haeli House makes it easy to embrace the slower pace of life.

Steep Driveway, Important Booking Information: Haeli House has a very steep, unpaved driveway to access the home. A 4WD/AWD vehicle is highly recommended due to the steep driveway for guests staying here in the winter months. It is highly encouraged the rest of the year.

Security Cameras: There are two outward-facing outdoor security cameras on the front porch and the garage. Both face the driveway and car parking areas for plowing and security purposes.

Area Information

Hike or ski right out your back door and explore the woods and shoreline of Big Bay. You are located near lots of activities at Haelie House. Head down the shore and just a few miles away you will find the Judge C.R. Magney State Park and the infamous Devil's Kettle Waterfall. Stop by the restaurant at Naniboujou for a full meal or the Chicago Bay Marketplace for a quick bite. Or, head up the shore about twenty minutes to the Grand Portage Reservation where you will find the Grand Portage National Monument and the Grand Portage Lodge and Casino, with a full-service restaurant. Visit the Grand Portage State Park located on the US/Canada border and home to Minnesota's tallest waterfall!
