About Portage House
Set deep in the woods, down miles of dirt roads, on the shores of Loon Lake, in the heart of the Gunflint Trail, in Grand Marais, Minnesota near the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, you will find Portage House: A Canoeists' Paradise. In this cozy cabin, you will feel truly unplugged and in tune with nature. Nothing will greet you but the songs of the birds and the rustling of the trees as wildlife passes through. Slow down and enjoy a different pace of life.
Portage House is a two-room cabin with shoreline access to Loon Lake. Inside, the main room has a living area with a futon and sleeper sofa, as well as a full kitchen with an oven, fridge, and sink (with indoor plumbing!). The second room is a full bathroom with a walk-in shower. This is a minimalist cabin with comforts that make it appealing for those who want to get away, but also enjoy some of the amenities of home. No TV, no internet, and no cell service, but there is a phone in case of emergencies. Sit out on the lake-facing deck and enjoy the
Housekeeping Note: There is no housekeeping or linens provided for this cabin. You must bring your own sheets and blankets (or sleeping bags) and towels and clean your way out for the next guest. We provide some basic soaps, toilet paper, paper towels, and cleaning supplies for your stay. The cabin is accessible by car, but a 4-wheel drive vehicle is recommended for venturing out along the Gunflint Trail's lesser-traveled areas.
Allergy Warning: Please note that while this cabin is NOT pet-friendly, the owner does have a dog who stays at the property on occasion, so a dander/fur-free home is not guaranteed.

Bring your canoe and launch right from the shoreline and enjoy your time on Loon Lake or portage onto Crab Lake. You can also spend some time exploring the many destinations the Gunflint Trail area has to offer. The Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center is just up the trail and offers a history of the area. Visit any of the area outfitters for boat rentals, maps, advice, and supplies for your outdoor adventures. Check out the Towering Pines Zip Line if you're looking for a thrill. Grab a bite to eat at the Trail Center Restaurant, Loon Lake Lodge Dining Room, or Trail's End Cafe. Or, just come to escape and relax from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Whatever it is you seek, the Gunflint Trail area is ready to deliver.
