
Each June the North House Folk School in Grand Marais, Minnesota, hosts the Summer Solstice and Wooden Boat Festival. The weekend long festival is a vibrant celebration of traditional craft, the summer solstice, community, and the natural beauty of Lake Superior’s North Shore. Held each year on the weekend closest to the Summer Solstice on June 21. The Wooden Boat Show
Set against the stunning backdrop of Grand Marais harbor, the festival is hosted by the North House Folk School and showcases an impressive array of handcrafted wooden boats, from sleek kayaks to classic sailboats. Visitors can participate in number of events throughout the weekend. Explore the Harborside Boat Walk in the Rec Park, engage with artisans demonstrating traditional skills like blacksmithing and woodworking, and participate in mini-courses and maritime workshops.
The festivities kick off on Friday with a neighborhood picnic, live music, and family-friendly activities. As evening falls, the community gathers for contra dancing and a communal paddle on the harbor. The evening culminates in a Summer Solstice Poetry Celebration. Anyone can participate in the Summer Solstice Poetry Celebration! Either with their own summer-themed poem, or reading a favorite poem.
The Summer Solstice Pageant
Saturday continues the excitement with additional craft demonstrations, the Boats-to-Tools Auction, and the enchanting Summer Solstice Pageant performed by the Good Harbor Hill Players.
The Summer Solstice Pageant is much beloved tradition that gets the entire community involved. In the weeks leading up to the festival, preparation begin! From costume and puppet making to stilt walking! Many Cook County community members come together to create a magical show. One filled with music, color, laughter, and larger than life puppets. Leading up to the pageant you may see colorful stilt walkers around town practicing for the big event!

Visitors also have the opportunity to sail on the Hjørdis, a 50-foot traditionally rigged schooner. Hjørdis tours offering a unique perspective of Lake Superior and the surrounding landscape.
