Poplar River Falls

Tucked inland in the hills above Lake Superior in Lutsen, Minnesota, Poplar River Falls is one of the North Shore’s lesser-known waterfalls.

The Poplar River begins inland in northeastern Minnesota and flows roughly 21 miles before emptying into Lake Superior.

Near the ski hills of Lutsen, where the river narrows, is where the most dramatic cascades occur. During peak flow, water rushes through the canyon with incredible force, creating the powerful roar that makes North Shore waterfalls so memorable.

Because this stretch of the river sits farther inland than many North Shore waterfalls, and is not located along a state park trail system, it often feels quieter and more secluded. Making it a great spot for visitors looking to explore beyond the usual roadside stops.

Waterfall Season

Like many waterfalls along the North Shore, Poplar River Falls is most impressive during the spring waterfall season.

After a winter that often brings more than 100 inches of snow to the region, spring snowmelt sends water rushing through the rivers and streams flowing toward Lake Superior. This surge dramatically increases the flow over the falls, turning the Poplar River into a powerful cascade.

Water levels can also rise after heavy summer and fall rains, but spring typically provides the most dramatic views.

Hiking the Falls

One of the easiest ways to explore the falls is from trails near Lutsen Mountains and the nearby section of the Superior Hiking Trail. A popular route is the Poplar River Falls Loop, a roughly 3-mile hike with moderate elevation gain that winds through forest and ski trails before reaching the river. The loop typically takes about an hour to complete and is considered an easy-to-moderate adventure for most visitors.

Visitors can also take a more direct route to the falls and back. This shorter hike is about 1 mile round trip and takes roughly 20–30 minutes.

Know Before You Go:

  • Trails may be muddy during the spring waterfall season.

  • Sturdy footwear is recommended.

  • Water levels and trail conditions can change throughout the season.

  • Always use caution near cliffs and fast-moving water.
