Located on the stunning shores of Poplar Lake, Trail Center Lodge has been a beloved landmark on the Gunflint Trail since 1938. Originally built as a logging camp, this versatile destination has transformed over the decades into a hub for adventurers, locals, and visitors alike. Today, it serves as a restaurant, gas station, gift store, grocery shop, and information center—a one-stop shop for anyone exploring the Northwoods.
Under the ownership of sisters Anna and Sarah Hamilton, Trail Center Lodge has gained a reputation for its delicious home-style cooking, warm hospitality, and rustic Northwoods charm—and I have to say, their salmon patty and fries are my favorite meal so far!
The friendly and knowledgeable staff, combined with the lodge’s welcoming atmosphere, make every visit a memorable experience. Beyond the restaurant, the lodge offers a selection of groceries and supplies, catering to the needs of both locals and travelers.
Camp Chow: Adventure Meals Made Easy
One unique feature of Trail Center Lodge is its role as the home of Camp Chow, a line of premium outdoor adventure foods. These conveniently packaged meals are perfect for campers and outdoor enthusiasts seeking hearty, flavorful options for their wilderness adventures.
Camp Chow offers a diverse selection of locally assembled meals, with options for both single and double portions to suit different appetites. Popular dishes include the flavorful pork sausage gravy, their renowned chili, and a satisfying mushroom soup. The variety and quality of the meals are highlights for visitors.
More Than a Destination: A Northwoods Tradition
In the winter, the Trail Center serves as a hub for the Mail Run Sled Dog Race as well as a checkpoint for the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon. These thrilling events are a highlight of the winter season, drawing crowds eager to witness the excitement and cheer on the teams. Traditionally held in January, the races may be postponed to February or March in years with little snow (so be sure to check our social media for updates).
Whether you’re stopping by for a hearty meal, stocking up on supplies, or simply taking in the breathtaking scenery, Trail Center Lodge offers a quintessential Gunflint Trail experience.
Getting There
From the town of Grand Marais, take the Gunflint Trail north, deep into the beautiful Northwoods. About halfway up the 57-mile road (hence the name Trail Center) you will reach a point where the speed limit slows down. That’s where you will find Trail Center. Trail Center is located on Poplar Lake.
