Refreshing Getaway

Review by Char
It's one thing to look at pictures, but another thing to experience something first hand. Rocky Shores Retreat is a beautiful place for a relaxing and refreshing getaway and only two miles from Grand Marais! My husband and I were alone, but I could see a larger group of people having a great time. It's spacious and well laid out. The place was spotless. Everything is high quality and well taken care of. The stone fireplace was cozy and the floor to ceiling windows brought the outdoors in. I loved the sound of the waves crashing on the shore. I was surprised to see how much the water on Lake Superior changes from day to day. I would definitely recommend Rocky Shores for a getaway.

A Grand Escape

Review by Justin
I was lucky to happen across this great house just north of Grand Marais just as it was being made available for the rent, and the new owners were very accommodating in making it a great. The house is big, clean, and had new/nice appliances— all the things that would make for a great vacation rental experience. There’s certainly enough room to spread out. It has two incredibly large bedrooms and a large shared area comprised of the kitchen, dining and living room. The vaulted ceiling makes that area very airy and with the many east-facing windows, made for an incredible amount of morning light to fill the space as the sun lifted above the lake through the trees. Opening the windows made for a wonderfully peaceful moment to lay out a mat and meditate which my friend did each morning. I think the only thing that would make it sweeter is candles for evening ambience. There’s a large deck at the front of the house which was also a nice way to experience the early day. The deck is at grade, so no railing separates you from nature. The flowering yard and woods that wrapped around the house were filled with texture and color and fragrance that made it such that we wanted to live there fore the rest of our years. While dreaming away about that, I noticed a fox was looking down at us from a rocky perch above the side yard. He vanished just as I pointed him out to my friend. The property experiences a little road noise from Highway 61 but you can still hear the surf on the rocks across a quiet road. Saunter down to a little picnic area that overlooks a short rocky slope to the lake and you’ll forget about everything but the lake anyway.

Great for Connection

Review by Anna
I like the narrow but intimate stretch of rocky shoreline that an old wooden flight of steps takes you down to. Hopefully it’ll stay that way, native and rugged. Makes for a deep connection to nature and the spirit of the lake when the day is ending and the skies turn into pastel swatches with the sun setting behind you. All the tools and amenities are there for cooking just about any meal you desire. And the house itself is located very close to downtown Grand Marais if you need anything. I love the food co-op and fresh fish options for meal planning if you’re not intending to dine out. My friend’s routine was to get espresso coffee in town every morning, along with donuts from World’s Best and I snuck bites of the extra donut we always bought, when he wasn’t looking. Alas, the granulated sugar on my chin betrayed me! Oh well. He was lucky enough to have a remarkably resourceful and amazing cook (me) who provided us fresh fish and vegetable meals every night with luncheons out in town. Don’t hesitate! Book while you can!
