Stay in a slice of Tofte history!

Built in 1930, Tofte Hytte is the sole surviving Surfside Cabin, a former resort of modest cabins built right at the water’s edge near the beginning of the North Shore’s tourism boom. The name Hytte, Norwegian for ‘small cabin or rustic retreat’, pays homage to Tofte‘s history as a fishing village settled by Norwegian immigrants.

The cabin is furnished with the best of yesteryear from family heirloom antiques to vintage, including a 1950s Hotpoint refrigerator and Fiestaware dishes, alongside today’s modern comforts and conveniences. The curated artwork includes photographs depicting some of Tofte’s early fishing families as well as original watercolors including one by a local North Shore artist.

This one-bedroom, one-bathroom cabin delivers true North Shore charm with its warm wood interior and panoramic views of Lake Superior. The gentle sound of waves echoing against the cliffside creates a soothing backdrop as you unwind. There is an apartment-sized kitchen with a small fridge next to a small eating area. An additional sleeping area in the sunroom provides an ideal spot for peaceful summer evenings—perfect for children or a single guest, as the space is more intimate and best suited for smaller sleepers.

Step outside and take in the wide-open lake views from the spacious deck or grab a seat on the viewing bench as freighters glide by. With ample yard space, a fire pit, and outdoor seating, Tofte Hytte encourages guests to enjoy morning coffee at sunrise, yard games in the afternoon, and s’mores under star-filled skies. Fire up the grill for a classic summertime BBQ while waves sparkle below you.
