If you've visited the North Shore in the past, you've likely passed the large sign along Highway 61 on the expressway that reads "Tom's Logging Camp". Perhaps you're like me and you see the sign frequently and think "I should check that place out someday", but as you're heading up the shore to your destination the thought quickly leaves your mind. It did mine for many years.  That is until I decided to finally swing into Tom's Logging Camp from the North Shore Scenic Drive on a sunny afternoon to see what the place is really about.  Now, I am [...]

Although they might not be the biggest vessels, this harbor has seen increased boat traffic for many years. This public access facility was developed by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, the US Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis County, and the City of [...]

French River

2021-08-10T16:45:41+00:00Activities & Attractions, Beaches, Scenic Drive|

If you find yourself driving along the North Shore in need of a reprieve, make a stop at the French River. The French River offers quick, easy access to Lake Superior’s shoreline. It gives you the opportunity to dip your toes in the water on a hot day. It is also home to an adult fish trap used by the French River Cold Water Hatchery (FRCWH). The trap is used to capture spawning fish (Chinook Salmon, Steelhead, Kamloops and Rainbow Trout) who are then brought indoor to the spawning facility upstream where they spawn and they are released. Though the [...]

Stoney Point

2021-02-25T23:11:03+00:00Activities & Attractions, Beaches, Scenic Drive|

Although very rare, there are spots to surf on Lake Superior! One of these spots is named Stoney Point. Located about ten miles north of Duluth, this little spot on the beach is best known for its enormous freshwater waves. The lay of the land and great power of the lake make this spot a favorite for local surfers. Some of them even say it competes with the best surfing locales in the world. Some of the Great Lakes best surfing comes in the winter, powerful winter storms mean strong winds and good surf. You'll likely see surfers in full [...]
