Old-Growth Forests

2021-08-10T19:48:11+00:00Nature|

There are not many old-growth forests remaining in the state of Minnesota. We on the North Shore are lucky enough to have three of them that can be easily accessed. What is an Old Growth Forest? An old-growth forest is a forest that has not undergone any unnatural changes or major disturbances (e.g. logging) for at least 100 years. These forests contain young, mature, and dead-standing trees and have a multi-layered canopy. They tend to recover from natural damage like wind and fire faster than disturbed forests and create a habitat that is ideal for diverse wildlife. Old-growth forests are [...]

Sitting a mile and a half off the Gunflint Trail in Northern Minnesota is the Magnetic Rock. The Rock is a relic of the glacier age. The rock is a 60-foot rock, soaring 30 feet into the air from its 10 by a 20-foot base. Not only does the monumental-like appearance of the rock make it unique, but as its' name suggests, the rock is magnetic. It gets its magnetic properties from the mineral magnetite. Magnetite is the same mineral that is found in the underlying bedrock of the Gunflint Iron Formation. The formation runs from Northern Minnesota into [...]

Caribou

2021-02-25T21:30:56+00:00Animals|

Some time ago, caribou were roaming the North Shore but were driven out. These large deer species prefer mature pine forests. So when logging started removing their habitat, they left.
